Why Narrow PaaS Platforms Fall Short

  1. PaaS integrations have high latency, cost, and a terrible security profile. Vercel -> Supabase -> SSO -> Search engine -> Workflow engine… it’s insane.
  2. Technology selection- this is a fast moving industry, and you need to be able to use different technology and languages. Narrow PaaS is 5 year old bet.
  3. Cheap analytics is essential… and the PaaS egress tax for managing telemetry and logging is insane.
  4. The need for a singular identity and authorization layer across all services and agents is fragile and tenuous in narrow PaaS.
  5. Durable execution and event queues. They are shipping unproven narrow solutions that work with limited languages and technologies. Real AI applications aren’t “build in a weekend, scale to millions” prototype solutions.
  6. GRC (Governance, Risk and Compliance) for critical corporate data and activities. Are you willing to be that most applications DON’T move on prem to be colocated for data and agentic workflows?
  7. Multiple fully managed test and validation environment. Building on a front-end PR is a naive and massively limiting workflow.

The benefit of PaaS is ease of use and outsourced operations and compliance. These two curves- capability vs convenience - have flipped with agentic development and agentic operations.

In the agentic world, more capability IS more convenience

  1. Get access to more “raw materials” for the agents.
  2. Agentic systems can handle the complexity, so you get it at maximum agentic conversational convenience.
  3. Everything is co-located and running on a common infrastructure for data and security.
